Hong Kong runs on QR codes. From convenience stores and taxis to street-food stalls and government bill counters, scanning to pay has replaced cash in most daily transactions. AlipayHK is one of the three dominant e-wallets powering this shift, alongside PayMe and Octopus. What sets AlipayHK apart for expats is a combination of two things: you can start using it before your HKID arrives, and it works seamlessly across the border in mainland China, Macau, and Japan.
This guide covers how to register, what each verification tier unlocks, how to top up, what you can pay for, and how AlipayHK compares to PayMe for everyday expat life.
What Is AlipayHK?

AlipayHK is a stored-value e-wallet operated by Ant Group, the financial technology arm behind mainland China’s Alipay. It is a separate app from the mainland Alipay used in the rest of China, designed specifically for the Hong Kong market and regulated by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) as a licensed stored value facility.
The app enables QR code payments at over 100,000 merchants across Hong Kong, bill payments covering more than 60 utility and government service providers, person-to-person transfers, and cross-border spending at over one million merchants in mainland China, Macau, and Japan. AlipayHK also supports public transit through its EasyGo QR code system, which works on the MTR, buses, and ferries as an alternative to the Octopus card.
Despite sharing the Alipay brand name, AlipayHK operates independently from the mainland app. The two wallets hold different currencies (HKD vs RMB), use different account systems, and require separate registrations. You do not need a mainland Chinese bank account or phone number to use AlipayHK.
Why AlipayHK Matters for Expats
For newly arrived expats, AlipayHK solves a problem that PayMe does not: it works before your HKID arrives. While PayMe requires a valid Hong Kong Identity Card to even register, AlipayHK allows basic registration with just a Hong Kong phone number. That means merchant QR payments are available from your first week in the city, covering supermarkets, restaurants, convenience stores, and pharmacies.
The second major advantage is cross-border access. Expats who travel to Shenzhen, Guangzhou, or anywhere in mainland China on weekends or for work can pay at over one million merchants using AlipayHK, with spending automatically converted from HKD to RMB at the point of sale. No mainland bank account, no RMB cash withdrawal, and no separate app required.
For expats who split their time between Hong Kong and the mainland, AlipayHK is not optional. It is essential infrastructure.
How to Register for AlipayHK (Step by Step)
Registration takes under five minutes and requires no documents beyond a working Hong Kong phone number.
Step 1: Download the app. AlipayHK is available on the App Store and Google Play. Search for “AlipayHK” and download the app with the blue logo (not the mainland Alipay app, which has a different blue icon).
Step 2: Select your language. The app supports English, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese. English is fully supported across all features.
Step 3: Create your account. Tap “Create account” and enter your Hong Kong mobile number. You will receive an SMS verification code. Enter it to proceed.
Step 4: Set your passwords. Create a login password (8 to 20 characters, including numbers and symbols) and a separate six-digit payment password. The payment password is used to confirm every transaction.
Step 5: Start using the app. Your unverified account is now active. You can top up your wallet and begin making QR payments at merchants immediately.
If you already have a Taobao account, you can skip the registration process entirely by tapping “Log in with Taobao” on the opening screen and linking your existing credentials.
Identity Verification: What Each Tier Unlocks
AlipayHK operates a tiered verification system. The more identity information you provide, the higher your daily and annual transaction limits. Basic merchant payments work at the unverified level, but transfers, cross-border remittances, and higher spending require verification.
| Feature | Unverified | Intermediate | Advanced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Requirement | HK phone number | Bank account linked (same name) | HKID photo + live selfie |
| Processing time | Instant | Instant | Up to 5 working days |
| Payment per day | HKD 3,000 | HKD 20,000 | HKD 30,000 |
| Payment per year | HKD 25,000 | HKD 100,000 | HKD 200,000 |
| Top-up per month | HKD 10,000 | HKD 30,000 | HKD 30,000 |
| Transfer per day | HKD 3,000 | HKD 10,000 | HKD 20,000 |
| Taobao purchases | Credit card only | Yes | Yes |
| Cross-border remittance | No | No | Yes |
| P2P transfers | No | Yes | Yes |
For expats without an HKID: The intermediate tier is available by linking a Hong Kong bank account in the same name as your AlipayHK registration. This raises your daily payment limit to HKD 20,000 and your annual limit to HKD 100,000, which is more than enough for typical daily spending. No HKID is needed for this tier.
For expats with an HKID: If you are staying 180 days or more, HKID registration is required within 30 days of arrival. Once you have the card, the advanced tier requires photographing your HKID and completing a live selfie verification. Processing typically takes five working days. Once approved, your limits increase further and cross-border remittance becomes available.
Important note on passport verification: AlipayHK previously accepted passports and Mainland Travel Permits for identity verification, but this option ended on 31 October 2021. The current verification pathways are bank account linking (intermediate) or HKID (advanced) only. For full details on the verification process, see the AlipayHK account security FAQ.
How to Top Up Your AlipayHK Wallet

AlipayHK offers several ways to add funds to your wallet balance.
Cash top-up at retail stores. Visit any 7-Eleven, OK Convenience Store, Watsons, Fortress, McDonald’s, or Wellcome and ask to top up your AlipayHK account. Present your QR code at the register, pay in cash, and the balance updates instantly. This is the most accessible method for new arrivals who do not yet have a local bank account linked.
Bank account transfer. Link a Hong Kong bank account through the app and transfer funds directly. Most major banks are supported. No fee applies for standard transfers.
Online banking. Top up via your bank’s online portal or mobile app by selecting AlipayHK as a payee.
Credit card. Some Hong Kong-issued credit cards can be linked for top-up, though availability depends on the card issuer. Check with your bank for compatibility.
Top-up limits vary by verification tier. Unverified accounts are capped at HKD 10,000 per month. Intermediate and advanced accounts can top up up to HKD 30,000 per month. For full details on current limits, see the AlipayHK top-up FAQ.
What You Can Pay With AlipayHK
In-store merchant payments. Scan the merchant’s QR code or present your own QR code to be scanned at checkout. Accepted at over 100,000 locations across Hong Kong including supermarkets (ParknShop, Wellcome, Donki), convenience stores (7-Eleven, OK), fast food chains (McDonald’s, KFC), pharmacies (Watsons, Mannings), and a growing number of restaurants and independent shops.
Online shopping. AlipayHK is accepted on Taobao (with identity verification), selected Hong Kong e-commerce platforms, and services like Klook for local experiences and travel bookings.
Bill payments. Pay over 60 different utility and service bills directly through the app, including electricity (CLP, HK Electric), gas (Towngas), water, mobile phone bills, and government rates. This eliminates the need to queue at payment counters or set up direct debit for each provider separately.
Public transit via EasyGo. AlipayHK’s EasyGo QR code works on the MTR, KMB and Citybus routes, Star Ferry, and other public transport operators. Open the app, tap EasyGo, and scan the QR reader at the gate or on the bus. This is a viable alternative to the Octopus card for daily commuting, though Octopus remains faster for high-frequency tap-and-go entry.
Taxis. An increasing number of Hong Kong taxis display QR codes for AlipayHK payment, particularly in urban areas. This is convenient when you do not have small bills for the fare.
Using AlipayHK in Mainland China, Macau, and Japan
This is the feature that makes AlipayHK indispensable for expats who cross the border. At any merchant in mainland China, Macau, or Japan displaying the “Alipay+” or “支付寶” logo, you can scan to pay using your AlipayHK wallet. The transaction amount is converted from RMB (or local currency) to HKD automatically at the prevailing exchange rate and deducted from your HKD balance.
No mainland Chinese bank account is needed. No RMB cash withdrawal. No separate mainland Alipay registration. This alone makes AlipayHK the simplest way for Hong Kong-based expats to handle payments on cross-border trips.
The QR scanning function works offline, meaning you can complete payments even in areas with poor mobile signal, as long as the app has been opened recently while connected.
Cross-border remittance (sending money to a mainland Alipay account) is available to advanced-tier users. The fee is HKD 25 per transfer, waived for first-time transfers or amounts exceeding RMB 6,500. Daily limit is HKD 20,000, monthly HKD 100,000, and annual HKD 500,000. The recipient must hold a mainland Alipay account verified with a valid Chinese travel document.

The practical split: PayMe dominates person-to-person payments among Hong Kong residents. If your colleagues, flatmates, or friends use PayMe to split dinner and share rent, you will need it for that social layer. AlipayHK dominates cross-border spending and is the faster option for brand new arrivals who do not yet have an HKID.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use AlipayHK without an HKID? Yes. Basic registration requires only a Hong Kong phone number. Unverified accounts can make merchant payments up to HKD 3,000 per day. Linking a bank account (intermediate tier) raises the daily limit to HKD 20,000 without needing an HKID.
Is AlipayHK the same as mainland Alipay? No. AlipayHK is a separate app with a separate account, holding HKD. Mainland Alipay holds RMB and requires a Chinese bank account. However, AlipayHK can be used to pay at mainland Alipay merchants through the Alipay+ cross-border network.
Can US citizens use AlipayHK? Yes. Unlike PayMe, AlipayHK does not exclude US citizens. There are no FATCA-related restrictions on AlipayHK registration or usage.
Does AlipayHK work on the MTR? Yes. The EasyGo QR code function allows entry and exit at MTR stations, as well as payment on KMB and Citybus routes, Star Ferry, and other transport operators.
Can I send money to someone in mainland China via AlipayHK? Yes, if your account is at the advanced verification tier (HKID required). The fee is HKD 25 per transfer, waived for amounts over RMB 6,500. The recipient needs a verified mainland Alipay account.
What happens if my phone runs out of battery? AlipayHK requires an active app to generate or scan QR codes. If your phone dies, you cannot make payments. Carrying a backup payment method (Octopus card or physical bank card) is advisable.
Can I use AlipayHK to shop on Taobao? Yes, with identity verification (intermediate or advanced tier). Unverified accounts can only pay via a linked credit card, not wallet balance.
