Art Central 2026: The More Accessible Art Basel Alternative
Art Central is usually dismissed as 'Art Basel's little sibling' and the truth is more generous. It is the friendlier fair to actually enjoy. We spent the 2026 opening week walking both tents to explain why Art Central is the one we send friends to if they only have one morning free.

If Art Basel Hong Kong is the world-class commercial fair with a serious collector atmosphere, Art Central is its more open-armed counterpart, a sprawling outdoor art fair on the Central Harbourfront that feels approachable to anyone, from serious collectors to first-time art fair attendees to families looking for something different to do on a March weekend.
This year Art Central returns from 25 to 29 March 2026, occupying its familiar home at the Central Harbourfront between IFC and the Star Ferry. It opens on the same day as Art Basel’s preview and runs through the full public period, making it a natural part of Hong Kong’s art week itinerary.

What Is Art Central?
Art Central showcases over 100 galleries from across Asia and beyond, with a particular focus on emerging artists and regional galleries that may not yet have a place at Art Basel’s more selective entry criteria. In practice, this means the fair often surfaces artists and galleries that are genuinely exciting rather than simply validated by the market.
The fair features 500 artists across a five-day programme that extends well beyond gallery booths. Performances, large-scale installations, video art, curator-led talks, and artist walkthroughs are all part of the schedule, the kind of programming that makes an art fair feel like a cultural event rather than a retail operation.
The harbourfront setting adds a dimension that indoor fairs cannot replicate. The outdoor walkway between the exhibition tents offers views of Victoria Harbour and the Kowloon skyline, making even the transition between booths a pleasant experience. On a clear March day, it is a genuinely beautiful place to spend several hours.

Art Basel or Art Central, or Both?
The honest answer is that they serve different purposes. Art Basel is where the serious commercial action happens, the established galleries, the blue-chip works, the collectors and curators who have flown in from around the world. Art Central is where you are more likely to discover something unexpected, engage with an artist directly, or simply enjoy an art fair on a Saturday morning with a coffee and no particular agenda.
For expats new to Hong Kong’s art scene, Art Central is the better entry point. For those with a specific interest in following the market or seeing the works of globally significant artists, Art Basel is essential.
