H Queen’s on Queen’s Road Central has become one of Hong Kong’s more interesting dining addresses over the past few years. The building that houses many of the city’s top contemporary art galleries, including David Zwirner, Hauser and Wirth, and Gagosian, has also accumulated a strong collection of restaurants on its lower floors. Migas, a Mediterranean bar and restaurant originally from Beijing, brings a tapas-and-wine concept to the third floor that draws a mix of expats, local food enthusiasts, and the gallery crowd that circulates through the building.
The name comes from the classic Spanish dish of fried breadcrumbs, and the kitchen leans heavily on the coastal cuisines of Spain, southern France, the Levant, and North Africa. It is a tri-concept space: a full restaurant, a vermouth bar called La Vermuteria, and a music lounge that hosts live sets on weekends. That combination means the atmosphere shifts depending on when you visit, from a composed lunch spot during the day to something louder and more sociable after dark.
What to Order at Migas
The menu is built around the small-plates format that Mediterranean restaurants have exported successfully around the world, but Migas also offers larger sharing dishes that justify a longer sit-down meal. We started with the tortilla espanola and the croquetas, both solid benchmarks for any place claiming Spanish credentials. The tortilla arrived properly set on the outside with a soft, just-runny centre, and the croquetas had a crisp shell with a bechamel filling that actually tasted of ham rather than flour.
The roasted cod with brandade-stuffed piquillo pepper (HK$198) was a standout among the mains. The fish was flaky and well-seasoned, and the piquillo pepper added a smoky sweetness that worked better than expected. For the table, the roasted chicken with Omani dried lime (HK$298 half, HK$588 whole) was the biggest surprise: the dried lime gives the bird a citrus fragrance that is unlike anything you find at most Western restaurants in Central.
The Wine List and La Vermuteria
The wine programme is where Migas separates itself from the pack of Central dining spots. The list gives serious attention to Spanish regions that remain underrepresented in Hong Kong: sherries from Jerez, crisp Albariños from Galicia, old-vine Garnacha from Aragon, and lesser-known Riojas that go beyond the usual Tempranillo. If you are the kind of person who drinks Manzanilla with tapas, you will feel at home here.
La Vermuteria, the dedicated bar section, focuses on vermouth-based cocktails and gin and tonics served in the oversized copa glasses that are standard in Madrid and Barcelona. It is a good spot for a pre-dinner drink even if you are not eating at the restaurant, and the outdoor terrace seats offer a view over Queen’s Road that is surprisingly pleasant for Central.
The Space and Atmosphere
The design takes cues from the casual but considered aesthetic of Madrid’s better neighbourhood bars: tiled surfaces, warm lighting, a long bar counter that invites the kind of slow eating and drinking that tapas culture is built around. The outdoor seating area is the real draw, particularly on cooler evenings when the terrace fills up with people who came for one drink and stayed for three.
The music lounge hosts live DJ sets and performances on Friday and Saturday nights, which shifts the energy from restaurant to something closer to a Central nightlife venue. If you prefer a quieter meal, weekday lunches and early dinners are the way to go.
The Set Lunch
The three-course set lunch at HK$268 is the best-value entry point. It runs Monday to Friday from noon to 2 pm and includes a starter, a main, and dessert from a rotating selection. The quality matches the a la carte menu, and the price is competitive for a restaurant of this calibre in H Queen’s. If you are working in Central and want a proper sit-down lunch that is not another salad bowl, this is worth bookmarking.
Getting There
H Queen’s is at 80 Queen’s Road Central, directly accessible from the Central-Mid-Levels escalator network. The nearest MTR is Hong Kong Station (Exit C, about 4 minutes on foot) or Central Station (Exit D2). The building is between Wyndham Street and Stanley Street, and the entrance is clearly marked at street level. Take the lift to the 3rd floor.
Walk-ins at the bar are typically possible for smaller groups, but booking is advisable for dinner tables of four or more. Call 9210 8868 or check @migashongkong on Instagram for the latest menu and reservations. If you are visiting during Art Week or a gallery opening at H Queen’s, combining a food crawl with gallery visits upstairs makes for a strong Central evening.
