Why HSBC Is a Popular Choice for Expats in Hong Kong

HSBC is the largest retail bank in Hong Kong by customer base, and for many expats it is the first bank they open an account with after arriving. The bank operates an extensive network of branches and ATMs across the city, and most employers in Hong Kong can deposit salaries directly into an HSBC account without issue.
Beyond everyday banking, HSBC offers a global network spanning more than 20 countries and territories. If you already hold an HSBC account in the UK, Australia, Singapore, or elsewhere, you can link it to your Hong Kong account through HSBC Global View, giving you a single dashboard to manage finances across borders. This makes HSBC particularly useful for expats who move between countries or need to send money home regularly.
All banks in Hong Kong are regulated by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), which enforces strict anti-money laundering and customer protection standards. Your deposits at HSBC are protected under the Deposit Protection Scheme up to HKD 500,000 per depositor.
HSBC Account Types: Which One Is Right for You?
HSBC Hong Kong offers two main personal banking tiers that are relevant to expats: HSBC One and HSBC Premier. The former HSBC Advance tier has been merged into HSBC One, so if you see older guides referring to Advance, that product no longer exists as a standalone option.
| HSBC One | HSBC Premier | |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum Balance | No minimum TRB for HKID holders; HKD 10,000 TRB for accounts opened from Jan 2026 (non-HKID) | HKD 1,000,000 Total Relationship Balance |
| Monthly Fee if Below Balance | HKD 100 (applies to accounts opened from Jan 2026 for non-HKID holders) | HKD 380 (waived for first 6 months) |
| Multi-Currency | 12 currencies including USD, GBP, EUR, JPY, AUD, CAD, SGD, and RMB | 12 currencies plus preferential FX rates |
| Global Transfers | Free HSBC-to-HSBC transfers via Global View | Free global transfers plus emergency cash up to USD 2,000 |
| Dedicated Relationship Manager | No | Yes |
| Wealth and Investment Services | Basic investment access | Full wealth management with dedicated specialists |
| Lifestyle Benefits | Standard | Dining offers at Michelin-starred restaurants, travel credits, Asia Miles, hotel discounts |
For most expats arriving in Hong Kong on a standard employment visa, HSBC One is the practical starting point. It covers salary deposits, bill payments, multi-currency savings, and everyday spending. If your total relationship balance (including savings, investments, insurance, and lending) reaches HKD 1,000,000, you can upgrade to HSBC Premier for additional perks and a dedicated relationship manager.
What Documents Do You Need?
The documents you need depend on whether you already hold a Hong Kong Identity Card (HKID).
If you have an HKID (new version issued from November 2018 onwards):
- Your HKID card
- A smartphone with the HSBC HK App installed
- GPS location enabled on your device (you must be physically in Hong Kong)
That is all you need for the online application. No proof of address or employment letter is required for the app-based opening.
If you do not have an HKID (opening in-branch):
- Valid passport
- Valid visa or Hong Kong entry permit (e.g. employment visa, IANG, Top Talent Pass)
- Proof of residential address dated within the last three months (utility bill, bank statement, tenancy agreement, or government correspondence)
- Employment contract or letter from your employer confirming your role and salary
- Source of funds documentation may be requested for compliance purposes
Bring original documents rather than photocopies. HSBC staff will make copies on-site if needed.
How to Open an HSBC One Account Online (HKID Holders)
If you already have an HKID, the fastest route is the HSBC HK App. The process takes under five minutes and does not require a branch visit.
Here is how it works. First, download the HSBC HK App from the App Store or Google Play. Open the app and select “Open an Account.” You will need to scan your HKID using your phone camera for identity verification. The app will ask you to enable GPS to confirm you are physically in Hong Kong. If you entered Hong Kong on a foreign passport, you may be asked to upload your exit-entry record. Review and confirm your personal details, then submit.
Once approved, your account is active immediately. You can start receiving transfers, setting up FPS (Faster Payment System), and using PayMe right away. A physical debit card will arrive by post within four to six working days.
You must be aged 18 to 75 and must not already hold any HSBC account or credit card in Hong Kong. If you have an existing account from a previous stay, contact HSBC to reactivate it instead of opening a new one.
How to Open an Account Without an HKID
If you do not yet have an HKID, perhaps because you have just arrived or are still waiting for your card, you will need to visit a branch in person. Not all HSBC branches handle non-HKID account openings. The two locations that process these applications are the Mong Kok branch at 673 Nathan Road (2/F, HSBC Building Mong Kok) and the Hong Kong Office at Level 3.
Book your appointment in advance through the HSBC eTicketing system. Walk-ins are possible but may involve a long wait, particularly at the Mong Kok branch.
At the appointment, the staff will verify your identity documents, confirm your visa status, and complete enhanced due diligence checks as required under HKMA regulations. This process typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. Your account may be activated on the same day, though in some cases the bank may require additional verification that extends the timeline by a few working days.
HSBC has also expanded digital account opening to holders of passports from approximately 15 countries, allowing some non-HKID holders to apply via the app. Check the HSBC account opening page for the current list of eligible passport nationalities.
You can find your nearest HSBC branch using the HSBC branch finder.
HSBC One Fees and Charges
For accounts opened before 1 January 2026, HSBC One has no monthly management fee regardless of your balance. This grandfather clause means existing account holders are not affected by the fee changes below.
For accounts opened on or after 1 January 2026, a monthly management fee of HKD 100 applies if your Total Relationship Balance falls below the required threshold. This fee primarily affects non-HKID holders. HKID holders opening HSBC One accounts continue to enjoy no minimum balance requirement.
HSBC Premier carries a monthly below-balance fee of HKD 380 if your Total Relationship Balance drops below HKD 1,000,000. New Premier customers receive a six-month waiver on this fee.
Other common charges to be aware of include outward telegraphic transfer fees for non-HSBC transfers and replacement card fees. For the full and most current schedule, refer to the HSBC fees and charges page. Banking fees are subject to change, so it is worth checking the official page before opening your account.
Tips for a Smooth Account Opening
Timing matters. Many employers in Hong Kong require a local bank account before they can process your first salary payment, so aim to open your account within the first week of arriving. If you hold HSBC in another country, contact your home branch about opening a Hong Kong account before you relocate. The international referral process can have your account ready by the time you land.
When visiting a branch, bring all original documents. Photocopies and digital screenshots are generally not accepted for identity verification. If your proof of address is in a language other than English or Chinese, bring a certified translation.
Once your account is active, set up the Faster Payment System (FPS) through the HSBC HK App. FPS lets you send and receive instant transfers using your phone number or email address, and most local payments in Hong Kong run through this system. Also register for PayMe by HSBC, the city’s widely used peer-to-peer payment app.
If you hold HSBC accounts in other countries, enable Global View in the app to see all your accounts in one place and transfer funds between them instantly at no charge.
Finally, keep your contact details and address updated with HSBC. If your visa status changes or you move to a new flat, update your records through the app or at a branch. Outdated records can trigger compliance reviews that temporarily restrict your account.
