Why Half of Hong Kong Shops Here Now
Every weekend, thousands of Hong Kong residents cross the border into Shenzhen with a single mission: filling a trolley at Sam’s Club (山姆会员商店). The American warehouse chain, owned by Walmart, has become one of the most talked-about cross-border shopping destinations for expats and locals alike. Prices on everything from premium beef to bakery items run 30 to 50 percent below Hong Kong equivalents, and the product quality is genuinely impressive.
Shenzhen now has four Sam’s Club locations: Futian, Qianhai, Longhua, and Longgang. For Hong Kong visitors, the Futian branch is the most practical choice. It sits inside the SCPG Center (formerly Guotou Plaza) on Nonglin Road, a short metro ride from Futian Port. It also opens earlier than every other branch in the city, at 7:30 AM, giving early risers a head start before the weekend crowds arrive. If you are planning a family trip to Shenzhen, a Sam’s Club run is the perfect way to stock up before heading home.
Getting Your Membership

Sam’s Club is members only. You will not get past the entrance without a valid card. The standard membership costs ¥260 per year (roughly HK$280), which includes a main card and one free companion card. A premium “Excellence” membership at ¥680 per year (roughly HK$730) adds perks like free same-day delivery and exclusive product access. Most casual shoppers find the standard tier more than enough.
Hong Kong residents can sign up at the customer service desk inside any store. You will need your Home Return Permit (回乡证), a mainland Chinese phone number that can receive SMS verification codes, and the membership fee. Download the Sam’s Club app beforehand to speed up the process. The app is available on both iOS and Android, and once registered, your digital membership card works at the door. No need to carry a physical card.
One practical tip: if you do not have a mainland phone number, prepaid SIM cards are available at most phone shops near the border crossings for around ¥20 to ¥50. A working number is mandatory for both the membership application and the app.
What to Buy: The Greatest Hits

The bakery section alone is worth the trip. Sam’s Club’s Member’s Mark Swiss roll (瑞士卷) has become something of a cult item, available in original, earl grey, matcha, and chocolate flavours. A full 1.2 kg box of 16 pieces costs around ¥49.80. The mochi bread (麻薯面包) is another bestseller, soft and chewy with a subtle sweetness that keeps you reaching for more. For something more indulgent, the durian mille crepe cake (榜莲千层) and matcha double-layer cheesecake (¥99.90 for 600g) are both excellent.

The meat and seafood section is where the real savings hit. Premium US and Australian beef is priced well below Hong Kong supermarket equivalents. Grass-fed beef ribs run about ¥398 for 1.5 kg, a price that would be unthinkable at a Hong Kong wet market. The mixed nut packs (¥115 for 1.1 kg) and dried beef jerky (¥149 for 448g) are popular grab-and-go items. Household staples like the 30-roll toilet paper pack (¥69.90) and bulk olive oil also draw serious savings compared to Hong Kong prices.
The Cheapest Lunch in Shenzhen

Before or after your shop, stop at Sam’s Cafe (山姆餐吧), the in-store food court located near the checkout area. It is open to members and their guests, and the prices are almost absurdly low. A whole roast chicken costs around ¥39.80. A pizza slice starts at ¥8. Hot dogs, chicken burgers, and ice cream sundaes all come in under ¥20. The food is basic but consistently good, and the portion sizes are generous by any standard.
The cafe is busiest between 12:00 and 14:00 on weekends. If you want to eat without queuing, aim for a late morning or mid-afternoon visit. The seating area is spacious but fills up quickly during peak hours.
How to Get There from Hong Kong

By metro (recommended): Cross at Futian Port. On the Shenzhen side, take Metro Line 2 (Shekou Line) to Qiaoxiang Station (侨香站), Exit A. Walk 10 minutes east along Qiaoxiang Road to the SCPG Center. The entire journey from Futian Port to the store takes about 25 minutes. If you prefer a shorter walk, exit at Antuo Hill Station (安托山站), Exit B on Line 2 or Line 7, which is a similar distance from the store.
By direct bus: Yongdong Bus operates a cross-border express service that runs directly from Hong Kong to the SCPG Center (where the Futian Sam’s Club is located). The route has over 10 pickup stops across Hong Kong, with 13 round trips daily. Tickets are available on Klook and KKday. This is the most convenient option if you plan to buy in bulk and do not want to haul heavy bags through the MTR.
Delivery to Hong Kong: If crossing the border is not an option, Sam’s Club now offers delivery to all of Hong Kong, including outlying islands. The service costs HK$30 for the first kilogram and HK$4.50 for each additional kilogram. Orders are placed through the Sam’s Club app (requires membership) and typically arrive the next day. It is not as cheap as shopping in person, but it removes the border crossing entirely.
Practical Tips for First-Timers
Go on a weekday. Weekend crowds are intense, especially at the Futian branch. Weekday mornings (particularly Tuesday to Thursday) are the quietest, with shorter checkout lines and full shelves in the bakery section. The Futian branch opens at 7:30 AM, a full 90 minutes before any other Shenzhen location.
Bring your own bags. Sam’s Club does not provide free shopping bags. You can buy reusable bags at the checkout, but bringing your own (especially wheeled trolley bags if you are crossing the border) saves hassle. Many Hong Kong shoppers bring collapsible shopping carts specifically for Sam’s Club runs.
Payment: WeChat Pay and Alipay are the primary payment methods. Cash (RMB) is accepted but less common. International credit cards may not work at the checkout, so make sure your mobile payment is set up before you go. If you are visiting other Shenzhen attractions on the same trip, the DJI Flagship Store and Bambu Lab are both worth a stop.
Free samples: Sam’s Club is famous for its sampling stations, especially on weekends. The deli, bakery, and snack aisles all have staffed counters where you can try before you buy. On weekday visits, sampling stations are fewer but you get more personal attention.
