How a Cantopop Legend Put a Cooked Food Stall on the Map

Sing Kee (誠記) has been feeding Kennedy Town locals from the same cooked food centre stall for over 60 years. The family-run operation inside the Smithfield Municipal Services Building was always a neighbourhood favourite, but it was never on the tourist radar. That changed when Cantopop superstar Eason Chan (陳奕迅) was spotted recommending the stall. The endorsement went viral on Chinese social media, where posts tagged with his name have collectively drawn thousands of likes and comments.
Today, visitors from mainland China, Southeast Asia, and beyond queue alongside HKU students and retired locals who have been coming here for decades. The draw is simple: no-frills Hong Kong comfort food at prices that feel like a time warp, served in a cooked food centre that still looks and feels the way it did generations ago.
What to Order at Sing Kee

The menu board behind the counter lists over 40 noodle combinations, and the ordering system works a bit like cart noodles (車仔麵): pick your noodle type, then mix and match toppings however you like. You are not limited to the printed combos, so feel free to ask for custom pairings.
The four dishes that keep people coming back are the satay beef noodles (沙嗲牛肉麵), French toast (西多士), fried chicken wings (炸雞翼), and the classic iced milk tea (凍奶茶). Budget around HK$40 to 60 per person for a noodle dish plus a drink and a snack.
The Satay Beef Noodles Everyone Comes For

The satay beef noodles are the dish that made Sing Kee famous, and they remain the most-ordered item on the menu. The broth is peanut-forward with a gentle sweetness, fragrant without being overly spicy. Tender slices of beef soak up the satay sauce, and you can choose from instant noodles, rice vermicelli, flat rice noodles, or macaroni as your base.
Regulars on Chinese social media are split on whether the satay version is actually the best thing here. Several frequent visitors recommend the stir-fried beef rice noodles (炒牛肉粉) as an underrated alternative, and the cuttlefish head (墨魚頭) is a popular add-on known for its crispy, chewy texture. If you want the full experience, order the satay noodles and add a plate of cuttlefish head on the side.
French Toast, Chicken Wings, and Cha Chaan Teng Classics

Sing Kee is technically a cha chaan teng (Hong Kong-style tea restaurant), and the breakfast and afternoon tea items are just as important as the noodles. The French toast arrives golden and crispy, filled with peanut butter and served with a generous spread of condensed milk and butter on top. If you have tried the version at Cheong Kee in Happy Valley, this is a thinner, crunchier take on the same classic.
The fried chicken wings are another staple. They come out piping hot with a thin, crispy coating. Pair them with an iced milk tea or iced lemon tea, both of which are strong and well-balanced, and you have a textbook Hong Kong afternoon tea for well under HK$50.
Inside the Smithfield Cooked Food Centre

The Smithfield Cooked Food Centre sits on the upper floors of the Smithfield Municipal Services Building, with a wet market on the lower levels. Sing Kee occupies stall number 12 on the second floor. The space is air-conditioned, well-lit, and cleaner than most cooked food centres in Hong Kong, with proper chairs and tables rather than the plastic stools you might expect.
There is no English menu, but pointing at what other tables are eating works perfectly well. The staff are efficient and generally friendly, though service can slow down during the weekend lunch rush. Payment is accepted in cash, Octopus card, and Alipay. Arrive before 11:30am on weekdays to avoid the crowds.
How to Get to Sing Kee
Take the MTR Island Line to Kennedy Town station and use Exit A (Smithfield). Walk south along Smithfield Road for about two minutes. The Smithfield Municipal Services Building is on your left. Enter the building, head up to the second floor, and look for stall number 12.
Sing Kee is open Tuesday to Sunday from 6:30am to 5:00pm. It is closed every Monday. The stall is busiest between 12:00pm and 1:30pm, so plan accordingly.
