Why This Small Indian Shop in Tuen Mun Always Has a Queue

Walk past the ground-floor shops along Rainbow Garden (彩華花園) in Tuen Mun, and you will likely spot a line of people snaking out of a small storefront with a bright sign reading “Best Indian Cuisine.” This is 屯門咖喱屋 (Tuen Mun Curry House), and it has been serving authentic Indian curries to this neighbourhood for over 20 years.
The restaurant is run entirely by Indian staff who, remarkably, speak fluent Cantonese. The shop is small, with tightly packed tables and an outdoor seating area, but what it lacks in space it makes up for with flavour. On internet, the restaurant holds nearly 200 reviews and close to 1,000 photos, a testament to how many people feel compelled to document their meal here. On weekends, expect to queue for 15 to 30 minutes before getting a table.
In recent years, the restaurant has gone viral on YouTube, Instagram, drawing visitors from across Hong Kong. But for Tuen Mun locals, this place has always been an institution: the go-to spot when you want a proper curry at a price that will not break the bank.
What to Order: The $50 Lunch Set and Beyond

The star of the menu is the lunch set, priced at just $50 (or $42 for students). For that, you get a choice of curry (chicken, egg, beef tongue, or vegetable), plus a bowl of soup, stir-fried vegetables, fries, rice, a freshly baked naan bread, and a drink. It is an enormous amount of food for the price, and most visitors leave stuffed.

We recommend the curry beef tongue (咖哩牛脷). It is the most praised item across both OpenRice and social media reviews, with the meat cooked soft and tender, soaked through with rich curry sauce. The curry chicken (咖哩雞) is the safe classic, with juicy chicken pieces in a thick, aromatic sauce that balances warmth and depth without overwhelming heat.
If you want to upgrade from the lunch set, you can add extra for beef, fish, or lamb curries. The curried lamb leg (咖哩羊腿) is one of the restaurant’s signature dishes and worth the surcharge. Other standout items from the a la carte menu include curry stir-fried clams (咖哩炒蜆), curry stir-fried crab (咖哩炒蟹), and the iron plate grilled chicken (鐵板燒雞), all cooked with the same intense, freshly ground spice blends.
For dinner, there are set meals for two or more that include appetisers like Chicken Tikka (印度串燒五香雞件), samosas, garlic stir-fried vegetables, and two curries with rice and naan. The 拉茶 (pulled milk tea) is also popular, though some find it has a distinctive, almost herbal flavour that takes getting used to.
The Vibe: No Frills, All Flavour
Tuen Mun Curry House is not going to win any design awards. The interior is compact, with tables squeezed close together and a handful of outdoor seats by the pavement. The menu is straightforward: curries paired with rice or naan, a few appetisers, and drinks. There is nothing complicated about it, and that simplicity is part of the appeal.
The moment you walk in, you are hit with the aroma of freshly ground spices. The kitchen is run by Indian chefs who prepare everything from scratch. Despite the language barrier you might expect, the front-of-house staff handle orders in Cantonese with ease. English works too, and Mandarin is more limited.
The pace is fast. Because of the constant queue, regulars know to decide their order before sitting down. Food arrives quickly, turnover is high, and even on a busy weekend evening you should not wait more than 30 minutes for a table. Weekday lunches before 2pm and weekday dinners before 7pm are your best bet if you want to skip the line entirely.
Tips for Visiting

Getting there. The restaurant is at Shop 25, G/F, Rainbow Garden, near the Choi Lok (置樂) Light Rail stop. If you are coming by MTR, take the Tuen Ma Line to Tuen Mun Station and walk about 10 minutes, or transfer to the Light Rail. The bus stop at Chi Lok Garden (置樂花園) is right outside.
Best time to go. Weekday lunches between 11am and 1pm are busy but manageable. The quietest window is weekday afternoons before 3pm. Weekend dinner service from 6pm onwards will almost certainly mean a queue.

Payment. The restaurant accepts AlipayHK, credit cards, and cash. Note that a 10% service charge applies to all orders, which is standard for sit-down restaurants in Hong Kong.
Phone reservations. You can call ahead at 2404 1444 to check wait times, though walk-ins are the norm. There is no online booking system.
Portions are big. The lunch set is generous enough for most appetites. If you are ordering a la carte for a group, two to three dishes plus rice and naan will comfortably feed two people. Do not over-order on your first visit.
